Examining the Effects of e-Cigarettes on Teeth and Gums with Seymour Area Family Dentistry

Some people mistakenly believe vaping or e-cigarettes are much safer than cigarettes, and that using tobacco in this way won’t impact oral health.

The reality is much different. Flavored vaping pens can still dry the mouth, limit blood flow, and cause several oral health issues, including:

  • Gum disease
  • Cavities
  • Oral cancer

If the e-cigarette or vaping pen contains tar or nicotine, you may also experience tooth discoloration.

Gum Disease and Tobacco Use

It has been long established that tobacco use causes gum inflammation, which can lead to gum disease. Gum disease is especially concerning because it can mean tooth loss and so much more. Studies even associate the condition with Alzheimer’s disease, low birth weight, heart and lung complications, and more.

Other factors that promote gum disease include poor oral hygiene, lack of dental care, hormonal changes, and genetics.

Your dentist can treat gum disease to help prevent complications, but quitting smoking should be part of your treatment.

Cavities and Tobacco Use

Tobacco dries the mouth, allowing debris to stick to teeth. Eventually, this can lead to decay.

Oral Cancer and Tobacco Use

Tobacco, including vaping and e-cigarette use, are common causes of oral cancer. But, of course, tobacco use can lead to cancers in other areas of the body, too, including but not limited to the esophagus, throat, lungs, and more.

Quitting Tobacco

Quitting smoking can be highly challenging, but it’s worth it. You want to enjoy long-term oral and physical health, and quitting can help you do so.

If you’re having trouble quitting, talk to your doctor. Some medications and programs can also help you stop.
